Department Description:

The English Department is a subsidiary of the Faculty of Language. The department is designed to help students understand the basic rudiments of the subject in order to achieve fluency in the language. English Language plays an essential role in our lives as it helps in communication. It is the main language for studying any subject all over the world. The English Language opens a lot of new career opportunities for people. Students who can easily understand and speak the English language tend to comprehend other subjects easily, as they are taught in English. English is a tool for communication, business, politics, social, education and so on. English is very important because it can add insight and knowledge. English can also help in processing, analyzing and interpreting codes and technical data.

The Department is responsible for fostering a love of the subject at every level and promotes it within the School. The educators in this department maintain standards of teaching, learning and achievement, efficient use of resources and creative development of the English curriculum. They actively promote enthusiasm for the subject outside the timetable. 

Department Purpose:

In the English department, we teach students how to use language to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts, including academic, creative, business, and technical. The department offers programs in reading, writing, and critical thinking to a diverse student body at a premier International college while enhancing the development and professional expertise of our instructors to meet the changing needs of our students.

The work of our department includes:

1. Meeting the composition requirements for the college.
2. Providing a foundation in reading, speaking and writing for students who need support to meet the requirements of national and international examination bodies at the Junior and Senior school levels
3. Providing a program on developing students’ oral and written prowess in the usage of the language especially, those whose career plans require advanced reading and writing skills.
4. Offering opportunities for high school students to participate in international debates and public speaking competitions, spelling bees, essay writing competitions in order to expose them to the varied levels of the subject.

Contribution to the school

The English Department has contributed greatly to the lives of the students and the school as a whole. The outstanding performance of students in competitions and examinations cannot be over emphasized.

To mention but a few achievements:

1. The Department has been able to prepare students for international examinations such as Checkpoint, IELT, TOEFL< SAT, Cambridge, IGSCE. Levels and achieved remarkable successes in all from the past to the recent times.
2. Outstanding results in WAEC and NECO examinations.
3. Participation and Winning at the West African Schools Debate and Public Speaking Competition in Ghana for four years repeatedly.
4. First runner-up in the APEN Spelling Bee held in Lagos in 2022.
